5.0.0 "Gourd Mode"
Released
Major release. Autumn is now enabled by default. Read the breaking changes before upgrading.
Breaking changes
- The oven is on by default. Summer configurations that assumed the oven stays off will need updating.
- Salad has moved from main course to side. Existing salad-for-dinner setups continue to work, with a warning.
- Soup is now a valid answer to the question of dinner on any day of the week.
Added
- Winter squash: butternut, acorn, delicata, kabocha. Delicata skin is edible after roasting, so skip the peeler.
- Apples, in more varieties than anyone can name. Tart, firm ones for baking. Crisp ones for eating over the sink.
- Braising: a covered pot in a low oven for about three hours, with almost no attention required. Think of it as a long-running background job.
Changed
- Default cooking time increased. Default effort decreased. These are related.
Removed
- Stone fruit. See you in 6.0.
Known issues
- A warm spice blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and clove ships enabled in every package, including several where nobody requested it. It cannot currently be disabled.
- Roasting a whole pumpkin for puree takes longer than expected and produces less than expected. Canned pumpkin puree is a supported alternative.
